Bushy Tailed Wood Rat - - - EEEEKKK!!

We woke up one morning last week to a lot of rodent droppings in our garage.  At first I just noticed some on the rug by our door.  I thought the kids were sloppy cleaning cookie's cage so I told them to pick it up and then wash their hands.  Later I noticed the dropping looked bigger than cookie's and there were several piles in different parts of the garage.  There was also a bunch of shredded paper stuff piled up in one corner.  We had a mystery guest in our garage.  That night we went and watched Jason light off fireworks at his house.   When we got home and I opened the van door Kate screamed, "there's the thing, the mouse!"  Sure enough there it was.  We spent the next hour chasing it around the garage until we got it to go out.  Scott had a couple opportunities to kill it but all the kids were watching and we didn't want to make a mess- it was pretty big.  I hope we don't regret that later.  We didn't know what it was.  At first we were thinking it might be a Chinchilla, but they aren't native to the area, and I didn't think it was someone's pet.  Also, when you look at the closeup of the picture, it really looked like a mouse head.  I was also in denial that it could be a rat because of it's furry tail.  A few days after I googled furry tailed rat, and sure enough the Bushy Tailed Wood Rat came up and it does live in the area.  YUK!  The word rat makes the whole experience worse - and that I made the kids pick up the poop with their hands.  Eewwwww.
