Oahu - Day 7

January 26th, Friday (written by Scott)- We got up early at 6am and got ready to go to Kaneohe Bay.  We got there right at their 8am opening and received an orientation of the Sunken Island Sand Bars and coral where we were going to kayak and snorkel.  One of the islands in the bay was coconut island, where Gilligan's Island was filmed.  The hostess offered to keep our rental car keys with her until we returned from our excursion, she also offered to rent us a dry bag ($5), but we declined all that because we had a dry bag fanny pack that Becky tested for water tightness before our trip and that had been working for days.  I think you see where this is headed.  We launched our tandem kayak and it only took us 25 minutes to paddle to the largest sandbar.  The weather was perfect, sunny, warm, and no wind.  The bay was like a glassy lake and the water was so clear and beautiful.  We snorkeled around the edge of the sand bar, and when we came back and stood by the kayak, Becky saw water inside the dry bag fanny pack I was wearing, which had Becky's iphone and our rental car electronic key inside.  Our awesome kayak and snorkel adventure was totally overshadowed with the thought of a ruined cellphone and rental car key.  The car key ended up working, but Becky's phone was toast, along with the more than 200 pictures she had taken on our trip to that point, which was the saddest part.  (When we returned home, Becky discovered her photostream had saved all the pictures except for the day the phone died.  The pictures were backed up whenever her phone was connected to the Whale House's wifi.)  We didn't let it get the best of us, however.  We still had the kayak for a few more hours so we explored the coral edge of 2 more sunken islands.  On of them had a lot of really cool looking fish.  It didn't really compare to Hanauma Bay, but it was still awesome.  We made our way without any phone navigation to the H3 Highway, which was a very scenic mountain route with tunnels through the mountain, to Waikele, where we got some more malasadas at Leonard's Bakery food truck and a Hawaiian plate at another food truck.  After that we went back to what was probably the most beautiful beach we say, Wiamanalo Beach where we boogie boarded for hours to finish out the day.  We made the long drive back to Pupukea (sunset beach) where we were staying.  At one point I stopped for a bathroom break, kind of in the middle of nowhere.  As I headed back to the car, I saw a guy running in our direction.  I wondered if he needed help, but he didn't say anything and kept running toward us faster and faster.  I didn't have a good feeling about it, like he might rob us or try to steal the car, so i didn't take any chances and ran back to the car, jumped in, and sped off before he got to us.  It was after dark.  After we got back to the house we walked down the lane to a Thai food truck for dinner.  We got pad thai and pineapple curry with Ahi in it.  We're both going to head home with some extra weight.  Ha!
